As I rode my motorcycle back home, in the freezing and rather unusual temps of South Florida, I pondered on what I had seen and listened to, while attending the First Annual South Florida Shark Conservation party. Before I do the usual name drooping and non profit promotion, let's get to what I thought was the most important message of this evening. In order to fight and win the battle dealing with the politics and economics involved in shark conservation, let's make sure all of us involved in it, know our data right. Let's educate ourselves properly. Use online ressources and reach out to shark biologists, professors and non profits to make sure you are not just an idealist shark hugger but, most importantly well educated to fight and win an argument. To start, know the "golden" dramatic and sad number. Dr. Samuel Gruber and newly professored Neil Hammerschalg from University of Miami confirmed this evening that the number of shark slaughtered every year is close to a 100 millions and that it was a conservative estimate.
We then got a nice treat from the guys at 333 productions and talented film maker Joe Romero as they presented "Lateral Lines" a short film on three pelagic sharks: Mako,Blue and White. Great story telling and photography as usual. Th evening presentation followed with PSA's from Oceanic Defense and Shark Savers/Wild Aid on campaigns involving catch and release for shark tournaments and Say No To Shark FIn Soup backed by famous Yao Ming.
As a closing, we had talented guitar player and songwriter singing his shark songs. Fun! wish I had gotten his name, the guy is talented.
Looking forward to see further events and colaborations in between non profits fighting for similar interests. As we say in French "L'union fait la force" (Unity gives power).
For the name dropping part... fun to meet and see again Samantha Whitcraft of Oceanic Defense Brendal Davis and Julie Andersen from Shark Savers and Lawrence Groth and Mary O'Malley (and Lupo) from Shark Safe Network. Of course let's not forget the guy who got me into the shark crowd and my brother in the blue, Felix Leander from Oceanic Dreams and his blog .

There was a news article that I read in a website that says something about the color to watch out for this 2010. It turns out that turquoise, my all time favorite color, is this year's shade du jour. I do not usually care that much for what are the latest and hottest trends, but I did appreciate the article.
I found some details that were true about the article. Yes, turquoise does remind me of going on a vacation. It basically reminds of clear skies and the refreshing waters of an ocean or even a pool. In fact, I have a turquoise pen that I scribble my paper writing ideas with. I also had the greatest fantasy of coloring my room into a nice turquoise shade, but my Goth rocker roommate decided against it. She says the color is too “happy” to make her relax and fall asleep easily, so we had a royal blue wall instead.
Needless to say, I love, love, LOVE turquoise.

oceanminds, wave rave, imaging foundation
The ocean’s health is in danger and in dire need of our attention. Studies are surfacing at an alarming rate, and they all concur: Our water planet is in trouble. Overfishing, acidification, immense swirling garbage patches, poaching and multiple other insults are turning our once brimming oceans into barren waters.
We need your energy! Here’s one way you can help:
Host a “Wave Rave 500” event on Saturday, January 16th.
This event will be an opportunity to rally support and have fun while celebrating our oceans. People from around the world will volunteer to host a Wave Rave in their local community. By doing so, we will send a strong message that ocean conservation defies boundaries. In order to affect real change, we must garner support from people of all political, religious, and national affiliations. To see current hosts, please go to http:/
Please let us know what you are planning and we will add you to the map!
This event can take many forms. For example, you could set up a picnic, a nautical-themed costume party, a potluck dinner, a movie night, a beach volleyball tournament—whatever floats your boat! You can even get crafty and create some festive ocean-related party decorations. Just remember the main goal: to have fun and celebrate our oceans!
As the host, you will encourage all Wave Rave guests to become a part of the movement by voting for Imaging Foundation in the Facebook contest. We will provide you with a document that you can distribute to your guests. This will include ideas about how attendees can rally additional support over the following week. (Remember voting will only be allowed from January 15 – January 22)
Important: All Waves must have at least one computer on site. The host should designate someone to operate the computer station(s) and encourage everyone at the party to log onto their Facebook accounts and vote. Guests who do not have a Facebook profile should be encouraged to create one, keeping in mind that the profile can be deleted as soon as the results of the contest are published.
Note: To invite non-members to the Facebook event, you’ll just need their email addresses. Non-members can RSVP by following a link that Facebook sends them in the invitation email.
Be sure to take plenty of pictures and video to capture the fun and email them to info@imagingfoundation.org. We will upload these images to our website, showing people from all over the world uniting to protect our oceans!
We will also you a “party packet” that will include suggested language as to how to invite guests to vote, as well as a take-home one-sheet that will describe how participants can continue their involvement after the Wave Rave event.
This event is an opportunity to have fun and show international support for our oceans. While here you will be able and to “vote” for an organization that is taking steps to reverse this tide. The Imaging Foundation-Sea Save has been named a finalist in the Chase Community Giving Facebook contest. With enough votes, they can win funding to support their ocean conservation initiatives. It’s time to celebrate and rally support!
If you are interested in hosting a "Wave Rave" party please email me for more information and for your party to be added to the "Wave Rave" map list!! Please share this note with everyone!! Help us HELP THE OCEANS!!

in need, clean water, help, others, gift, nonprofit, charitywater, oceanminds

I know, the main purpose of OM is to communicate important informations about the world's Oceans. When I publish a blog post it is usually to promote a non profit or a cause directly linked to the health of our Oceans and its inhabitants. For once I am going to not abide to the rule and promote a non profit that is doing tremendous work to provide healthy water to part of the world that desperately need it. As the Holiday season is upon us I urge you to forget about our materialistic needs and think about others and give the gift of pure, clean water.

To all of you who want to make a difference you have here a rare opportunity to make a difference. For $100 you can fund a "Say 'no' to shark fin soup" bus stop billboard featuring basketball star Yao Ming.
If you act now, the impact of your contribution will be doubled. Because of a generous matching grant from one of Shark Savers' sponsors.
Please forward this message to all your friends and spread the word.
Together we will make a difference.
Thank you for your support
