Over 20 internationally renowned ocean heroes will gather
in Boulder, CO, for the Colorado Ocean Coalition (COCO)’s Making WAVES 2012
weekend on October 20 – 21, 2012. The annual event, now in its second year, brings
together prominent ocean scientists, activists, educators, youth, and artists with our
growing “Inland Ocean Community.”
Featuring Jean-Michel Cousteau as the keynote speaker, the highlight of the
weekend will be the free Ocean Symposium on October 21, 2012 from 8:30 am to
5:00 pm at the Wolf Law Building, University of Colorado campus. In addition to
Jean-Michel Cousteau, this year’s event will include many notable and inspiring
ocean leaders such as Dr. Gregory Stone, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, Jim Toomey,
and Dr. Susan Shaw. For a list of speakers see http://coloradoocean.org/events/
upcoming/making-waves/speakers/.
The Symposium is geared to all ages, and is an educational event focused on
building awareness of critical ocean conservation issues and creating a community
of engaged ocean advocates.
Vicki Nichols Goldstein, Founder of Colorado Ocean Coalition says,
“Colorado is pivotal in that all of our water either flows to the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. We live
on a Blue Planet and the choices we make have impacts on our oceans and our lives.
We don’t have to see the oceans to take care of them.”
An evening fundraiser and gala benefiting COCO will take place following the Ocean
Symposium. The Ocean Celebration will be at the Spice of Life, 5706 Arapahoe Ave.,
Boulder, at 7:00 pm and will offer attendees the opportunity to interact “Under
the Sea” with the Symposium speakers and VIP’s on an intimate basis. Tickets
for the evening Ocean Celebration can be purchased in advance through http://
coloradoocean.org/.
The Making WAVES 2012 weekend will also feature an exclusive showing of films
provided by the prestigious San Francisco Ocean Film Festival. The selection of
films will be shown at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, CO on October 20,
2012. There will be a family matinee and an ocean issues showing in the afternoon
followed by an evening reception and program. Jean-Michel Cousteau will be signing
books and interacting with the audience. For detailed information and tickets go to

On Saturday, October 20, the Colorado European Union Center of Excellence, in
partnership with COCO, will host a brunch and seminar “European Marine Issues
and Policies and Areas of Collaboration with the United States” featuring Jean-
Michel Cousteau and other ocean experts. This opportunity to learn about European
marine issues and interact with our speakers in an intimate informal setting will be
held at the British Irish Studies Room on the fifth floor of Norlin Library on the CU
Boulder campus from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. For detailed information and tickets go
