Could Ishmael Be A Whale?

Well I believe Daniel Quinn the author of  Ishmael:An Adventure Of The Mind And Spirit  published in 1991 and winner of the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship ,would have explained that  the gorilla has a closer DNA to us humans than a whale. Now the need to have a representative from the animal kingdom very close  to us  in the family tree is I believe a key in Quinn’s brilliant story.  The premises of this extraordinary tale involves a young man Alan Lomex, answering to a newspaper add “Teacher seeks pupil, must have earnest desire to save world. Apply in person.” Our (somewhat) Hero shows up in the now mythical room 105 and finds out that the author of the newspaper add is a rather large size gorilla:Ishmael.Quinn’s gain a unique perspective though the main character of the novel being a gorilla.  Using what could be better described as telepathy, the two will embark on a discussion that will most likely rock your world and where everything”mother culture” installed on your mental hard drive will be questioned.

I read the book 4 years ago and it has completely changed the way I look at the world around me. I feel that  this book helped me understand and organize thoughts that I have had all along. Reading Ishamel is the starting point of an adventure, I would recommend to continue the adventure by reading “The Story of B” by the same author as you will be once again faced with the same philosophy and facts, presented yet in a different way. Daniel Quinn is an extremely talented story teller, and a brilliant scholar.  Ishmael is a page turner but also a required reading for everyone calling themselves an environmentalist.

Now you may go grab a copy in the closest library!

News Update From The Onion:Whale Christ Feeds Whale Masses With Single Krill

With Shark Gone Will There Be Hope For Man?

100 Millions sharks are killed every year to either end up in shark fin soup, in lubricant and vitamin A (oil from their liver), and leather. As sharks take a long time to mature to be able to reproduce and only give birth to a very few young at a time, some species are now on the brink of extinction. Sharks are a vital piece of the Ocean realm puzzle, as they are the one eating diseased animals, getting rid of  potential epidemic diseases in other species. One could only imagine the absolute disaster and domino effect that  would result to have such a crucial animal disappear from the earth fragile ecosystem. Most of all, what incredible impact it would have on our everyday life. Our Blue planet is so interconnected that destroying a specie is like shooting ourselves in the foot. Why has it taken us so long to finally get some attention on the matter? Well, it is rather simple and sad but true :Fear of the unknown. Depicted as a horrifying, mindless, blood thirsty, killing machine in the movie sensation “Jaws” by Spielberg (written by Peter Benchley) Sharks have become demons. In our general views, they are not apex predators but malign beings that await in the deep to jump on any human being  and tear them apart in a blood bath, all of which following the rhythm of the two-notes-requiem made famous in “Jaws” original soundtrack.

I have personally dove with a few species of sharks including the movie star himself Carcharodon carcharias aka the great white shark. Truth is, it is far from being the blood thirsty killing machine from the movies, rather I found it to be a tranquil and beautiful animal. Sure its physique imposes respect (especially for the really girthy ones) but its efficiency in the water and its curiosity toward the underwater monkeys that we are, cannot be translated into malignity.  My goal here is not to explain the behavior of sharks as I am not a specialist (ggoogle shark behavior, I recommend the great studies by Mark Marks with whom I had the chance to work with) and why certain species have been known to attack humans. My goal here is to argue the portrait that  corporate  media has a tendency to paint way to often to get  attention from the  general public.

The best way to get rid of our fear is to learn about this fabulous specie, I even encourage you to see for yourself first hand and dive with them. Although I am not a big fan of organized shark dives with extensive baiting, I believe it will help us understand sharks better and most of all get a hold of our fears.

Dial “M” For Monkey

Not a direct line for monkey business, but rather an album by Bonobo to rock the water world. I bought this album last year and since then it has accompanied my liquid thoughts and truly enhanced my underwater dreams soundtrack bank. Simon Green is the talented British D.J. that hides behind Bonobo and nothing but great baselines and ethnic groovalishious sounds flow out of his “Dial M For Monkey” album.

Categorized as Trip hop, Bonobo is groovin’ the underwater world for the better! I recommend blasting “Flutter” in your ears to enhance your mono-fining technique.

Hop On The Bus Gus!

Not a bus and far away from your average yellow submarine. The Deep Flight Super Falcon is as close to an underwater fighter jet as a sub can be. On the demo video you will find the inventor/engineer Graham Hawkes pulling underwater barrels fast enough to get your mind wonder on what is to come in the next few years as battery operated vehicule get more and more autonomy and power…Hawkes mention in an interview that the Super Falcon behaves just like a jet plane as a down push on the joystick will activate the wing flaps and the power itself is enough to submerge the sub, not slow and easy like its “ballasted” counterpart, but rather  like a torpedo style of immersion. Now here is an idea for you Mr Hawkes, how about a micro bubble shield like dolphins around the sub as it is moving through the water? US Navy torpedos are equiped with it for a enhanced glide and speed.

Power is already quite amazing as  a film crew managed to keep up with dolphins for an Imax movie shoot. 20 year in development has a cost and this new yacht toy retail for a nice $1.3 Million.

In the meantime I shall try go for the casting of the next james bond movie as this thing will most likely be part of it!

Yours bubbly,

You Don’t Know That You Don’t Know: The Transformation into Homo Delphinus Has Begun!

breath hold

Last week I took a Freediving class with Martin Stepanek at FII to refresh my knowledge and improve my techniques and skills in breath hold diving. Some fellow student had been spearfishing for a few years ,but never achieved long breath hold. One of them was particularly excited to find out that he could accomplish 5:00 min breath hold in static, simply by following  techniques and learning further about his own physiology with Martin. He repeated several time during the course as he made leaps and bounds in his progress: “Martin is a Magician!”

While Martin might very well be the closest thing to a marine mammal in the human family, and also is  very well versed on human physiology, physics of diving and human psychology, he is definitely not a magician!

As we watch the top freedivers venturing into depth past the 100 meter (330 feet) deep dives in competition, and the static breath hold (not moving just face down in the pool) pass the 10 min mark, what is next? Well I believe that the everyday freediver will enjoy a 2 min breath hold palying on the reef with marine creatures, enjoying themselves “Free like no other” as Martin and Sony his sponsor would say.

Who is the everyday freediver? well if you have ever held your breath and submerged your face underwater …YOU are! Now the only thing you need to know is that you don’t know that you don’t know. Before you try something silly in your swiming pool, go take a class and learn the SAFETY! And most of all learn about yourself ,your potential and your limits. The key to a good freedive session, is to be safe and have a blast!

Unlocking mystery of the deep: Looe Key reef getting a road map
A college class is bringing the underwater world of Looe Key to a 3D map that points out places of interest.
BY CAMMY CLARK
CCLARK@MIAMIHERALD.COM
LOOE KEY — Equipped with floating GPS units, side scan sonar and waterproof paper, college students dove 25 feet down into an underwater classroom with a pioneering assignment: create a three-dimensional, interactive map of a reef.

When completed, the map will show both the contour and biological life on Looe Key reef, considered one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world.

”It’s the first time this type of project has been done in the Keys,” said Patrick Rice, director of marine sciences at the Florida Keys Community College.

Just as a tourist map of Key West marks Ernest Hemingway’s House and the Southernmost Point, the portion of Looe Key mapped by Rice’s class will highlight points of interest such as spectacular coral head formations and known hangouts for Goliath grouper and other territorial sea creatures.

Looking For Massage Therapist For…Manatees!

Manatee scratch

“Look down!”, boat captain Jody Hogan saw them coming from the stern. I am in the water close to the bow, half awake, floating calmly, looking down into the 15 feet vis muddy waters in a top secret corner of Crystal river on the west coast of Florida. I could swear I am hearing mermaid whispers coming from a rock nearby, I soon realize that I did close the “Never Ending Story” that I was reading last night (you have to be a kid of the eighties to pick up on that one!), so it could only be the pudgy inhabitant of these usually crystal clear waters: The Manatee. Underwater, it almost sounds like birds singing, bubbles right by my right hand and the massive 9 feet , 500 pounds manatee decides  to emerge softly  right under me. I move slowly and cautiously like these gentle herbivores and start scratching his underbelly, he or she starts rolling over and almost grabs on to my hand with its dorsal fin to point them to the right scratch-able spot. Soon I have 5 individuals around and only three snorkelers with me, a phenomenal experience! “Regardes!!” my cousin Laurene, who is  paying me a visit from France is in for a treat. She can’t stop smiling, amazed by the gentle and friendly manners of these underwater giants. After a couple hours in the water we get out, it is 8:45 AM water temp is 70F and outside temp is somewhere in the low 40′s! We are blue lipped and shivering, but ecstatic. It is hard not to jump back in right away.We both bend over the bow of the boat to continue what seem to be a massage session for these gentle mammals.

When the gulf of mexico gets too cold, manatees migrate to the warmer waters of Crystal River. With a constant 70 F due to underground warm natural springs, Crystal river becomes the perfect haven for these blubber free marine mammals. Indeed, not like their cousin the whale and dolphin, manatees are herbivores and do not have insulating blubber under their elephant like skin, they are really much like us humans. World champion freediver Martin Stepanek from Freediving Instructors International, once told me in his classroom “Manatees are loosy freedivers very much like us human, they hold their breath with an average of 2 to 3 minutes and can hold a lot more (up to 8 minutes and further) when they feel danger. Human static breath hold is past 10 minutes these days, would that mean that if we could no longer sustain ourself on the land and have to go back to the 70 percent remaing part of this planet we would start evolving into a manatee? I wouldn’t mind I have always been a big fan of salad, I love moving slowly, enjoy the water world and love a good massage… and 8 minute breath hold ,I am in! Martin also did mention an important fact: Manatees are really advanced in diaphragm flexibility ( a freediver’s dream!) as they can compress or expend their lungs using it to achieve without much energy expenditure the three different states of buoyancy.

“They counted 368 individuals yesterday” Captain Jody explains that the Crystal River Wildlife Refuge closely monitors the population as they were on the federal endangered species list.Although the population is quite healthy right now, shrinking habitats, boat traffic and pollution are manatee’s main “predators”.  There is so much to say about these gentle giants,it is  impossible to paint the correct portrait of such an amazing animal, so pack your mask ,your snorkel and your suit and go to Crystal river Florida for the experience of a lifetime!

I recommend the private charters with Capt Mike’s Sunshine River Tours as you do not have to spend your time with too many human pods around and enjoy the unique interaction early in the day.

scratchily yours,

OM~
